A New Era
at Harbor House The Board of Directors of
Harbor Houses of Jackson, Inc. is pleased to announce that
the organization has begun to do business as Harbor House
Chemical Dependency Services. The decision to rename the
organization was one outcome of a strategic planning process.
In support of the new name, Harbor House has updated its
mission statement, modernized its logo and launched a new
web site at www.hhjackson.org. The organization’s new
mission statement is to offer a continuum of high quality,
affordable and effective chemical dependency treatment services
and programs for adults and their families, including those
who cannot afford private treatment facilities.
The new name better reflects the range of services and programs
that Harbor House Chemical Dependency Services provides,
especially in the area of residential treatment, and its
longstanding role in helping our neighbors to learn how to
live sober lives and return to the community as productive
citizens. Dr. J. Stacy Hughes, President of the Board of
Directors, reaffirmed Harbor House’s commitment to
continue to be one of the region’s premier community-based
nonprofit addiction treatment centers.
Harbor House was established by a group of forward-thinking
business and community leaders from the City of Jackson and
surrounding areas as a non-profit 501(c)(3) corporation in
the early 1970s. At that time, there was a lack of affordable
and accessible community-based residential substance abuse
treatment services in the region. Since the doors opened
in 1973, Harbor House Chemical Dependency Services has provided
compassionate care to over 10,000 individuals.
Harbor House’s treatment philosophy continues to focus
on rehabilitating the mind, body and spirit. M. Trost Friedler,
Harbor House’s Executive Director, stated that as an
organization we believe strongly that addiction is a treatable
illness, that it can be overcome by following a Twelve Step
recovery program and that residents of our community have
a right to have access to high quality treatment services,
regardless of their ability to pay. He continued by stating
that we are where we are today because of years of widespread
community support, the dedication and commitment of the Board
of Directors and the passion of our staff to offer quality
addiction treatment services.
Harbor House is certified by the State Department of Mental
Health to operate 77 residential treatment beds at two locations
in Jackson, Mississippi. The State also certifies the organization’s
Outreach and Aftercare programs and a DUI Diagnostic Assessment
Service. Harbor House receives financial support for its
services and programs from the Mississippi Departments of
Mental Health and Rehabilitation Services, the City of Jackson,
Hinds County, private foundations and individuals.
